Monitoring Body Urges Commitment to Bangsamoro Peace Process

(MENAFN) An independent monitoring group overseeing the Bangsamoro peace agreement has called on all parties to reaffirm their commitment to the accord as elections approach in the autonomous region in southern Philippines.

In a recent statement, the Third-Party Monitoring Team stressed the importance of maintaining progress on the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, which was designed to support long-term peace and self-governance in the region. It urged both the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to uphold trust and continue implementing the agreed transition framework.

The group warned that cooperation and mutual respect remain essential as the political transition nears its final phase, noting that trust built over years of negotiations could be easily undermined if commitments are not sustained.

The Bangsamoro region, home to millions of residents, has been undergoing a gradual political transition aimed at establishing an autonomous governance structure. However, the process has faced repeated delays, including multiple postponements of parliamentary elections originally scheduled several years ago.

The monitoring team also highlighted concerns over recent political developments that it said may have affected the balance of the transition process, emphasizing the need for decisions to remain aligned with the original peace framework.

Elections in the region are now expected later this year, marking a critical stage in the ongoing implementation of the peace agreement.
