Philippines’ Lazaro Lands in Myanmar on Aid Mission Before ASEAN Summit

(MENAFN) Philippine Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro arrived in Myanmar on Wednesday on a humanitarian visit, weeks before next month’s Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.

Lazaro headed an ASEAN Monitoring Team (AMT) mission to the AHA Centre in Taunggyi, in southern Shan State. Representatives of ASEAN member states and Japan joined her, according to a Foreign Ministry statement posted on the US social media platform X.

The mission handed out bags of rice along with family and hygiene kits to internally displaced people.

Lazaro is also set to lead the symbolic handover of a religious building.

The trip is intended to bolster humanitarian assistance for affected and displaced communities in Myanmar. The Philippines currently holds the ASEAN chairmanship.
